Google Editions: The newest eBook Store
Google Editions looks very promising.
Google are looking to provide 2010 with more advancements to the online book market when they release Google Editions, their online bookstore. It is hoped that the feature will be compatible with all devices (eBooks, tablets, smartphones, etc) and the library is scheduled to be available this summer in several countries.
The information was revealed by Philip Colombet, head of Google Books, at the show “Tomorrow the Book”, which took place on the 9th and 10th of March in Paris.
We hope to see that purchases of books on Google Editions will be available to download immediately, using Google Checkout and other payment tools to fund an account and populate a user library. No details regarding prices have been clarified.
Google is already popular with publishers, with many big names using Google’s tools to help sell their books. The business model of Google Editions is similar to that of the App Store, with 35% of sales going to Google and the rest to publishers. This should hopefully encourage a lot of publishers to sell via Google Editions.
Regarding a Google Tablet, Philippe Colombet confessed that Google was well under way onto producing a floor product. The product will not be an eBook, but a tablet with multiple uses, similar to the iPad. Any clear details have not been released, and we do not expect to hear much more on the tablet for a number of month.
